Cocoa Island

Floating serenely on crystal clear lagoon waters, the elegant timber dhonis and villas of Cocoa Island extend the promise of a truly luxurious and intimate retreat. This resort was purposely designed to offer a tranquil refuge to which to escape, and in which to relax, unwind and do very little. In fact, it is one of very few resorts in the world that succeed in getting it all exactly right, with its combination of stunning accommodation, sublime beaches, delectable food, and staff for whom nothing is too much trouble.

On arrival, after disembarking from the 40-minute speedboat transfer from Malé, guests are greeted by the chef and his staff with the traditional coconut flower drink, a local ceremony signifying that they are honoured visitors. Everything is arranged for guests' comfort -- all round the island lounge chairs are placed discreetly, and over-sized sofa hammocks swing from the towering palms. Peace and quiet pervade everything, and simplicity is the keyword -- there is no extravagance, no shops or gimmicks, just at one end the spa and hydrotherapy pool, and at the other the infinity pool, restaurant and bar.

This tiny island resort is actually a perfect place for doing absolutely nothing, except watch the colourful fish darting around in the pellucid waters, but for those who want to be occupied, there is plenty of activity. A PADI dive centre enables you to join a dive boat to one of 20 dive sites in the undisturbed waters of the Kandooma Channel, widely regarded as one of the best dive sites in the Maldives, while opposite there is a superb reef for catamaran snorkelling trips, and some of the best scuba diving in the world. The resort's water-sports centre offers sea kayaks and wind-surfing boards, and you can go fishing by dhoni or speedboat, or watch the dolphins on a sunset cruise. There is even a complimentary yoga class every evening.

At Ufaa, the enchanting restaurant (the name means "happiness" in Maldivian), beneath an alang-alang pavilion right by the infinity pool and the sea, the head chef draws his main inspiration from the Malabar Coast of south-west India, but cuisine of south-east Asia and modern Mediterranean dishes also feature in the daily changing menu. The emphasis is on seafood, such as fresh locally caught lobster cooked Keralan style, and also on organic, locally sourced produce. As well as serving food in the restaurant, the staff are only too happy to offer private dining on a secluded sandbank in the resort.
