As the pioneering luxury hotel in New York's historic and trendy Meatpacking District, the boutique Gansevoort Meatpacking offers a chic and sophisticated retreat amidst the bustling cobbled streets of this dynamic neighbourhood. Much of the cool 60s-inspired character of the Gansevoort is expressed by the sparkling two-level glass lobby, which is entered through a 14-foot-tall glass revolving door, framed by the hotel's gleaming metal façade that lights up at night with changing colours. The lobby is sleek and attractive, with a colour scheme of pink, white and grey, lit by day with an Andi Pepper custom-designed light fixture, and with disco lighting by night. The focal point is the chic and elegant Lobby Bar, complete with pool table and its own unique range of signature cocktails.
Without doubt, though, the hotel's top attraction is its fabulous rooftop area, with panoramic 360-degree views of Manhattan and the Hudson River. At its centre is the 45-foot heated pool, with an under-water sound system, and illuminated with subtle lighting in constantly changing colours. The pool is surrounded by landscaped gardens and terraces, and next to it is the expansive Loft area, with soaring 20-foot ceilings, wall-to-wall windows, and outdoor and indoor seating.
Also in the rooftop area, replacing the popular Plunge Bar, is Zerzura, named after the mythical oasis deep in the Sahara Desert. It's a welcoming blue-and-white tiled space, decorated with hand-made Marrakech tapestries, leafy papyrus plants and desert-themed murals, and lit with glowing Moroccan lanterns -- and it has a "secret garden" area where the party crowd loves to gather. As well as a range of exciting cocktails, there's a menu of Middle Eastern cuisine.
Also drawing in the young and the young at heart is Provocateur, with two distinct night-life spaces, Provocateur Nightclub and Provocateur Cafe. The nightclub, with leather banquettes and black-lace walls, offers a seductive atmosphere for dancing the night away to music from world-renowned DJs. For more intimate encounters, the Cafe, with a retractable roof, has a doll's house theme and is surrounded by a glass-enclosed garden.
The main dining venue is the attractive The Chester Restaurant, with a choice of indoor or outdoor seating. The al fresco patio area overlooks the cobblestone pathways of the historic Meatpacking neighbourhood, while the two-level indoor space has a rustic feel, with exposed white brick walls, and white marble table tops contrasting with black leather couches. The restaurant serves upscale American bistro menus, and the weekend brunches are especially popular.
