Fairmont Royal Pavilion

On the glorious Platinum Coast of Barbados stands one of the truly iconic boutique hotels of the Caribbean, which welcomes its guests with old-world hospitality, and timeless charm and grace. The Fairmont Royal Pavilion was one of the very first great beach hotels to open on the island, and is now considered the Jewel in Barbados' Crown. With its rich history, it has embraced the traditions of a Bajan plantation home, and massively contributed to the island's legendary reputation for warmth and friendliness.

The air of calm and stately elegance is noticeable from the moment guests pass through the gate into the grand driveway lined with towering palm trees, and arrive through romantic pillars and archways into the stylish courtyard lobby, with its colourful fish-filled pond. Beyond the lobby, the rooms and suites are situated in two buildings, separated by the beautiful freshwater pool and the Taboras Restaurant, and linked by pathways where lights at night illuminate the flowers and wall fountains. The hotel is surrounded by 11 acres of exotic gardens, laid out by an award-winning landscape architect, and filled with scents of bougainvillea, oleander, hibiscus and heliconia, as well as countless varieties of palm trees with their population of green monkeys - a must for guests is to take the head gardener's complimentary tour of the grounds.

The two superb restaurants are both among the most sought-after dining venues on the island. The exquisite Palm Restaurant, tucked under the pink Moorish arches of the hotel's original building, features marble floors and Bajan mahogany furniture surrounded by palms and tropical greenery, and affords panoramic sunset views. Guests will enjoy both local fare, using produce from the island's farms, and exceptional international cuisine from Michelin-starred chefs, to the accompaniment of some of the best live music talent in Barbados. For an even more romantic dining option, you can choose a candlelit dinner on the beach, with only the sound of the lapping waves to disturb you, or if you are in a Junior Suite you can enjoy an intimate dinner on your own private terrace, served by your personal butler.

By contrast, Café Taboras by the pool offers a relaxed open-air bistro setting, amid ornamental arches that both promote local architecture and provide a welcome canopy from the sun. As well as breakfast and lunch, there are regular theme nights, including a local Bajan Buffet and a Gala Dinner evening. Not to be missed is the hugely popular Sunday Brunch, with the catch-of-the-day Bajan barbecue accompanied by the rhythms of "Steel Pan by the Sea", or the delightful English afternoon tea served daily on the terrace.

As well as the pool with its heated Jacuzzi, there are two floodlit tennis courts, and available water sports include windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling and sailing. There is even a daily trip to swim with hawksbill turtles in the reefs that line the shore, and between May and November you can watch the baby turtles hatch and waddle into the sea. A popular activity is the complimentary weekly cookery class, where guests can find out how to recreate Caribbean flavours at home.
