Spread over more than a kilometre along three beaches of Sainte Anne Island, just a 10-minute boat ride from the Seychelles capital Mahé, lies the spectacular natural haven of Sainte Anne Resort & Spa. The idyllic 500-acre private island, with dazzling sandy beaches, is covered with tropical forest, and surrounded by one of the Indian Ocean's largest marine parks, swarming with unique under-water life. This stunning villa-only resort blends effortlessly into its natural surroundings, its private villas completely shrouded in expansive greenery, mingled with colourful Frangipani, bougainvillea and hibiscus.
The resort itself is understated and traditional, featuring an abundance of wood and stone with tropical accents, its red tile roofs, rope bridges and ornamental pools giving it an exotic feel. Just steps from the buildings, three crescent-shaped white sand beaches, lined with palm trees and flanked by dramatic granite boulders, are lapped by calm, shallow warm waters. Further away from the hotel, as well as the botanical gardens, dense with takamaka trees and giant foliage, the wilder part of the island is home to the legendary Coco du Mer, found only in the Seychelles -- and, in a leafy enclosure, there are three giant tortoises.
The four restaurants, three of which are on the beach, reflect the resort's beauty and serenity, and between them cover the whole culinary spectrum. The main restaurant, L'Abondance, a series of connecting terraces edged with reflecting pools, offers delicious buffets, and next to it, L'Oceane Beach Restaurant serves à la carte fresh seafood and Creole cuisine under a string of thatched pavilions. Le Mont Fleuri, dramatically set at the top of a spectacular granite outcrop, over a secluded creek, is perched on wooden stilts where guests dine at tree-top level, while the utterly charming Le Robinson is set on the sands inside a hidden cove, with 10 rustic driftwood tables under giant granite boulders, with a small rustic lounge next to each table for pre-dinner cocktails.
In case further aid to relaxation is required, there is the Takamaka Beach Bar, right on the sands in the shade of a centuries-old takamaka tree. While sipping tropical cocktails or exotic fruit juices, guests may have the chance to watch sea turtles coming on shore to lay their eggs. The resort also has a superb Clarins spa, with a traditional Japanese entrance featuring a slate pool, bordered by tropical greenery. The spa has three distinct areas dedicated to massage, beauty and relaxation, and includes Ayurvedic cabins and a balneotherapy room.
