The Mai Khao Beach, part of the Sirinat National Park, is a beautiful unspoiled stretch of sand on Phuket's north-west coast, and provides a superb setting for the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa, set right on the palm-fringed shoreline. Renaissance is a luxury brand within the Marriott hotel family, so guests can expect the signature amenities and levels of service that are promised by this brand name. Even though the resort is only minutes from Phuket International Airport, it seems a world apart, with no extraneous noise but the lapping of the waves.
On arrival, guests are greeted by valets and bellmen at the imposing entrance, which has a glass and wood porte cochère and infinity-edge reflecting pool. A short climb up a small flight of steps leads to the semi-open air lobby, with wood inlay ceilings, dramatic pillars, and a huge abstract light fixture carved in wood. For guests' comfort there is a circular settee strewn with pillows and a long maroon-coloured couch, and just beyond are double reflecting pools with infinity edges.
The grounds of the resort are full of palm trees and flowering shrubs, interspersed with paved pathways. There are two pools, the main one, separated from the ocean by a lush green lawn, being rectangular, with infinity edges and small bubbling jets. There is also a children's pool which is on several levels, with a deck surrounded by a grove of luxuriant vegetation.
The resort's main all-day dining venue is Loca Vore, where individual tastes are catered for in style at live food stations -- guests make their own choice of fresh local ingredients, including freshly-caught fish, and the chef transforms them into a unique customised dish according to the guest's personal taste. Takieng is the fine dining choice for dinner, serving both standard Thai food and local southern Thai dishes, such as crispy sea bass with spicy green mango salad, in a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere, with outdoor seating overlooking the sea. Sand Box, right on the beach, with sand floors, serves light lunches, and then transforms into a relaxed bar and barbecue at night.
For more casual fare, the Lobby Lounge is open all day, and is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a pub-style venue, with bar seating and plush love seats overlooking the lobby reflection pool, and guests can relax here at any time with a hand-crafted cocktail. Doppio is an attractive little coffee-shop and deli, serving ice creams, cakes and pastries all day, as well as take-away coffees.
A highlight of the hotel is the Quan Spa -- Quan is Chinese for water -- built around a large circular pool, underneath a round opening in the roof that lets in the sunshine and fresh air. Treatment focuses on couples, and treatment rooms have double beds and huge whirlpool tubs. There is an outdoor rainfall shower, surrounded by luxuriant greenery.
