On the glamorous Platinum Coast of Barbados stands the legendary Sandy Lane Resort, with a gold-plated reputation as one of the world's most luxurious hotels. For more than 50 years, the Sandy Lane has been the top choice of royalty and A-list celebrities, attracted by its unrivalled sophistication and opulence, and its outstanding levels of service. Now, following a dramatic reconstruction in 2001, the hotel has recreated its lavish elegance, and remains an exclusive enclave of serenity and indulgence for its fashionable clientèle.
The indulgence begins at the airport, where the hotel provides a complimentary fast-track arrival service with a luxury car, which could be a Rolls Royce Phantom. The road to the resort winds through beautiful gardens and mahogany trees towards the pillared entrance, and the gracious marble lobby decked with signature pink, where guests are offered a welcoming fruit cocktail. Check-in takes place not at a reception desk, but in the guest's own room.
The signature colour pink -- the resort's branding technique -- can be seen everywhere - the parasols on the beach, the restaurants, the flower arrangements. It sets off perfectly the creamy coral limestone rendering, which was used on the reconstructed building to create a unique sense of place. The design was inspired by the 18-century colonial Barbadian grand houses, and the sweeping staircases, the Palladian columns, and all the Caribbean Georgian details are retained, to create a state-of-the-art hotel that still holds on to its stately historic charm.
As you would expect, the resort's restaurants offer outstanding cuisine in exquisite surroundings. The main restaurant L'Acajou -- French for mahogany -- offers gourmet French and Mediterranean dining in a romantic beachfront setting, with two open-air levels of seating, table candles and oil lamps on walls, making the pink and white motif look spectacular. Bajan Blue is located on the lower terrace, and as well as offering more informal beach-side dining with an impressive wine list, hosts spectacular buffet evenings and an unmissable Sunday Brunch. Leisurely lunches with spectacular views are available from the Country Club, set high up above the coastline.
