Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa

On this island with a beach for every day of the year, the Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa sits on the most beautiful of them all, the renowned Dickenson Bay on the north-west coast. Its silky white sand and calm clear turquoise-blue waters, bordered with riotous tropical gardens, are just part of the magic that has led to this hotel being voted the World's Most Romantic Resort for 15 years in succession, at the World Travel Awards. With its gracious hospitality and understated elegance, this charismatic adults-only resort seems to have arrived at the winning formula for the ideal romantic Caribbean getaway.

One distinguishing feature of the resort is that it consists of two quite distinct sections, each with its own character. The older and more romantic part, the Caribbean Grove, is surrounded by enchanting gardens and built with island-inspired influences, with colonial-style buildings in cool pink and orange hues, connected by meandering pathways. The newer, more sophisticated section is the Mediterranean Village, with southern European features including tiled roofs and marble columns. Connecting the two is a lane with shops, jewellery boutiques and an art gallery.

The accommodation is divided between the two sections, and each section has its own lobby for check-in. The breezy Caribbean lobby is relaxed and informal, with high ceilings and brightly coloured decor, while the Mediterranean lobby features marble and dark wood, the walls adorned with painted frescoes. At either lobby, arriving guests are greeted with a cold towel, and a welcome drink of rum punch or champagne.

The grounds of the resort are full of romantic touches, like hidden gazebos, fire pits surrounded by sofas and lit up at night, and double hammocks along the beach. There are no fewer than six pools and six whirlpools, the massive main pool on the Mediterranean side covering 1,400 square metres, surrounded by white columns, and full of fountains and dolphin-shaped statues. On the Caribbean side, the main pool is set in a grove of palm trees, and features a little lazy river, where guests can float on rafts.

There are plenty of dining choices provided by the 11 restaurants, including Eleanor's, the beachfront fine dining restaurant serving upscale Caribbean cuisine. At the very popular Japanese Kimonos Restaurant, chefs cook at the table on a hot griddle, in several private rooms, while Barefoot by the Sea offers fresh seafood at tables right on the sand. The Drunken Duck is an English-style pub, offering typical pub food like shepherd's pie and fish and chips.
