Half hidden among luxuriant vegetation on a hillside overlooking beautiful Grande Anse beach, Mount Cinnamon's cluster of hacienda suites and whitewashed villas perfectly encapsulates the laid-back luxury of the Spice Island. Guests arriving on the bumpy road, curving past the end of the beach, pass through a stone archway into the clubhouse, a white stucco building with a terracotta roof, almost resembling a small castle. The vibrant lobby, scattered with attractive contemporary furnishings, displays bold splashes of bright yellow, blue and lime against a white backdrop. In the centre of the clubhouse, surrounded by the lobby, the restaurant and the bar, sits a small, picturesque freshwater pool.
The quirky historic charm of the hotel buildings is also evident in Savvy's Restaurant, which prides itself on providing some of the best dining on the island. It is a popular venue for local people, thanks to the traditional West Indian menus, which are written up on a chalk board and change every day. Its centrepiece is a 1953 Seeburg jukebox, loaded with vinyl 45 rpm records.
The terrace at Savvy's offers panoramic views across Grande Anse Beach, to the romantically twinkling lights of St George's along the bay. The restaurant's contemporary decor, matching the vibrant style of the lobby with brilliant splashes of colour, and its romantic pool-side tables for two, provide an attractive setting for guests to enjoy delicious West Indian and Mediterranean cuisine, plus English gastro-pub favourites. Menus feature the best locally produced ingredients, many of them sourced from the resort's own plantation at Mount Edgecombe.
The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, while lunch is available at the Beach Cabana, located right on the sands, with a relaxed, club-like atmosphere and pleasant island music playing. In the brightly decorated tent, with palm trees painted on the ceiling, there are attractive tables and chairs, which spill out on to the sand. The bar serves cocktails and a casual lunch menu, and games such as croquet and volleyball are also available.
The Mount Cinnamon Resort is owned by Peter de Savary, the British entrepreneur who also owns Mount Edgecombe, the 18th-century plantation further up the coast. Full of mango, nutmeg, cocoa and mahogany trees, as well as indigenous crops and exotic flowers, it is the source of most of the ingredients of the resort's restaurant menus. Guests are able to spend a day at the plantation, and combine their visit with a Grenadian cookery lesson from Janice, the hotel chef.
