Ayana Resort & Spa

From its breathtaking cliff-top position above the beautiful Jimbaran Bay, Ayana, meaning "a place of refuge", offers beauty, seclusion and luxury - all the pleasures that have earned Bali its nickname of the Island of the Gods. This exotic resort of thatched-roofed buildings and limestone carvings is surrounded by 190 acres of tropical greenery, and fringed by a mile of dazzling white shoreline. The panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, and of Bali's famed sunsets, are probably unrivalled anywhere on the island.

The resort has been beautifully designed to pay homage to its glorious natural setting with an airy, cool look that is skilfully blended with the best of Balinese styling, including thatched roofs, stone carvings and wood structures. The five beautiful pools are a work of art in themselves -- the Ocean Beach Pool, the only salt water pool, is literally carved out of the side of the cliff, while the two-tiered infinity-edge River Pool is called Ayana's Secret Pool, because of its secluded location. The award-winning Spa on the Rocks has treatment rooms cantilevered out over the ocean.

Guests arriving at the resort are driven for a mile through lush greenery, before being greeted in the lobby by smiling staff, with leis and live music. The open-air lobby is stunning, with opulent wood carvings, stonework, and beautiful Balinese artwork scattered everywhere, and over all is the awe-inspiring pitched ceiling, every inch covered with paintings of animals, plants, and representations of Balinese dancers. Further back there are stone columns with limestone relief, and at the lobby wings the ceiling is made of woven grass and open beams, decorated with gold leaf and ornately carved wood.

There can be few hotels in the world that offer such an extraordinary selection of dining settings as the Ayana,  starting with the iconic Rock Bar, built on natural rock at the base of towering cliffs and accessed from the top by what they call an inclinator -- one of the platforms is reached via a natural cave, and if you follow it you find a garden suspended over the beach. The fine dining venue Dava is a sleek lotus-shaped restaurant accessed via a floating garden, while Padi consists of four open-air thatched-roof pavilions, and features an open Asian heritage-style kitchen. Then there is Kisik, where you take the inclinator down the cliff-face and choose your seafood from the display -- it is then served to you at a table on the sand.
