Built around a lagoon pool on one of the finest stretches of the Seminyak shoreline, W Retreat Bali is the newest addition to the W portfolio. Although it is called a retreat, the resort actually promotes itself as a glamorous, sizzling playground designed for the fun-loving party crowd. But the setting it provides for all this vibrant action is the ultimate in chic, sophisticated luxury, and sleek, cutting-edge design.
The experience begins as guests arrive at the entry courtyard to be greeted by the huge, iconic W sign, sitting above a square pond, edge-lit with red strip lighting. Beneath an avenue of coconut palms leading to the hotel lobby, there is a series of custom-made light fixtures providing a contemporary twist on Bali's moss-covered clay pots, finished in glossy black. In the vast, open-air lobby, as much an entertainment space as a reception point, a long curved partition acts as a backdrop to the reception desks, and also separates arriving guests from the lobby bar, with its glowing counter and shelving.
The main pool area is a spectacular cluster of cascading water and paddy-field inspired ponds, looking out over Seminyak beach. The pool is dotted with small islands and palms, and features under-water coloured lights, which are dimmed after sunset, turning the pools into serene, reflecting surfaces. Spotlights project coconut-leaf patterns on to the deck area round the pool.
The dining options are equally stylish, the main choice being between Fire, with its wood-burning grill and pizza oven at the heart of its open-show kitchen, or Starfish Bloo, where top chefs showcase an East-meets-West display of skills and techniques, to bring the finest pan-Asian fare to your table. For those looking for a romantic celebration, Cellar is a select dining experience for only six guests, down among the collection of 200 fine wines. Even more exclusive is One Below, where a personal wine guru and chef designs your perfect meal, in a secret spot concealed within a cascading water feature.
It's at the hotel bars where the glitzy vibe really gets going, with WooBar, overlooking beach and pools, widely accepted as Bali's premier party spot, where the cool crowd hangs out till the early hours. Equally popular is trendy W Lounge, the place to be from breakfast till late at night. ICE is the coolest spot in town, where you can sip frozen cocktails and watch the sun go down.
