For 125 years, this legendary hotel has epitomised the romance of the Far East - a heady mix of history, luxury and colonial ambience which no other hotel on earth can equal. The Raffles Hotel is the jewel in Singapore's crown, its timeless elegance and inimitable style matched only by its tradition of superlative service. With its tropical garden setting and its classical architecture, it stands out as one of Singapore's most iconic landmarks, and during its history has welcomed a glittering array of celebrities, illustrious writers and royal personages.
The Raffles sets itself apart from the other top-flight hotels in Singapore, mostly glass-and-concrete skyscrapers, by adapting to the climate and making the most of the landscape and greenery. Its central courtyard is shaded by breadfruit trees and fan-shaped palms that rise to the height of the three-storey buildings. There is a covered arcade with classic columns and arches running along two sides of the hotel, leading to a covered plaza at the entrance.
Within this structure the hotel has retained the best from its past days, and combined it with the sophistication required by guests in the 21st century. The touches of colonial charm become evident as soon as guests pass through the palm-fringed doors, where the liveried Sikh doormen, in white turbans and gold sashes and braids, guide them through a wrought-iron portico. The three-storey lobby where they arrive is a cool white atrium space, with deep Turkish rugs and white and grey marble floors, full of antiques including the famous grandfather clock that is nearly 200 years old. From here you can follow the teak stairways to the suites, explore the grand ballroom with its ornate chandeliers, head to the Arcade for top-class retail therapy, or relax in the superb rooftop pool in its garden setting.
Of course the Raffles is full of wonderful restaurants too, including the world-class Royal China, and the renowned Tiffin Room, where the curry buffet is not to be missed. The stunningly restored Raffles Grill, with French windows overlooking the Palm Court, captures the essence of fine dining with its classical and contemporary French cuisine. And another treat not to be missed is the famed Singapore Sling in the Long Bar, where it was first concocted in 1915.
