Even by the standards of the Maldives, full of the world's most luxurious and romantic resorts, the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is hard to beat. It's a spell-binding resort that surpasses all expectations, and sets the scene from the moment of arrival for a tropical escape of unrivalled indulgence. Part of the renowned Taj group, the property has won countless awards, focusing on the flawless service, exceptional cuisine, and exquisitely chic design, all in surroundings of stunning natural beauty, encircled by one of the largest lagoons on the planet.
The resort is only a 15-minute speedboat ride from Malé, and the glamour starts immediately you step off the boat, when you are greeted with a shell necklace, cold towels and an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink, before being escorted to the ceremonial pavilion leading to the main lobby -- in fact, if you're a returning guest, you get a band and a shower of rose petals too. The place is tailor-made for romance, with flowering foliage and tropical palms lining the sandy walkways that lead to secluded beach coves with luxurious loungers. Romantic possibilities include champagne on the beach with a guitar serenade, a private sunset cruise, or a private dinner in a tree-top overlooking the lagoon, and the ultimate touch of romance is the tiny Ocean Pavilion in the midst of the lagoon, that can be used for secluded dining or couples' spa treatment.
The romance extends to the two gourmet restaurants, so dimly lit that you are given a torch to read the menu. The cuisine here is renowned as being some of the best in the Maldives, and includes European and pan-Asian menus at the split-level 24 Degrees on the beach, or "farm-to-plate" grilled and seafood delicacies at Deep End, the over-water fine dining restaurant. As well as the superb walk-in wine cellar at 24 Degrees, with vintage wines hand-picked by the island sommelier, there's also the Equator Bar, with a fabulous range of innovative drinks, mostly made from locally-grown ingredients.
