Hidden away in a secluded cove on Barbados' idyllic West Coast, the Sandpiper is one of the most exclusive boutique hotels in the Caribbean, and is a member of the elite "Small Luxury Hotels of the World." The owners succeed in combining luxurious indulgence with an intimate family atmosphere, and the warmest of Bajan welcomes, which brings people back year after year. A smaller sister hotel to the nearby Coral Reef Club, the Sandpiper is more relaxed and informal, providing the most discreet and charming of romantic hideaways.
Seclusion and tranquillity are of the essence for this hotel, which is set against a backdrop of radiantly-coloured bougainvillea, and framed by luxuriant gardens filled with coconut palms, orchids and hibiscus, creating an atmosphere of the utmost privacy. A stroll along flower-lined hidden pathways leads to the beautiful coral sandy beach, where a wooden deck overlooking the water is a perfect place to relax and hear nothing but the sound of the lapping waves. Inside, the hotel décor is simple yet sophisticated, with soft colours and mahogany furniture lending a distinct Caribbean feel, and the spacious hotel lobby has a few stylish seating areas facing the gardens.
The Sandpiper's award-winning Restaurant is regarded as one of the best dining experiences in Barbados, and is renowned for its eclectic menus crafted from local produce. Open on three sides, the restaurant is surrounded by ornamental koi ponds, and tropical gardens that are illuminated after dark by flaming torches, making it an enchanting place to savour original European and Asian dishes infused with Caribbean flavours. Wednesday is Caribbean and international buffet night, when guests can feast on favourites like Bajan flying fish, Caribbean shrimp and lobster salad, while Sunday night is barbecue night, with a selection of seafood and meats served to the accompaniment of a steel pan band.
For al fresco lunches and sundowner cocktails, the perfect place is Harold's Bar, right on the beach. Designed with wood, bamboo and thatched roof to create a typical Caribbean setting, the bar serves up an inventive and colourful selection of cocktails, including its special "Harold's Smile". It's an unbeatable way to enjoy the Caribbean sunset, and the bar is one of the island's most popular venues.
The Sandpiper's relaxed ambience is further enhanced by a weekly cocktail party, as well as nightly low-key entertainment with calypso, reggae and jazz musicians. There is a beautiful mosaic-tiled swimming pool, and the hotel has its own 30-foot catamaran for half-day and full-day chartering. And for further pampering, guests can be whisked by air-conditioned limousine to the Coral Reef Club's luxurious spa.
