On the fairy-tale island of St Lucia, the Rendezvous is a fairy-tale retreat for couples seeking the ultimate together time. Located on the dreamy white-sand stretch of Malabar Beach, this exclusive couples-only boutique resort has an unashamed focus on romance, and specifically sets out to create a personalised and intimate holiday experience for each individual couple. Originally opened by the Barnard brothers in 1966, it is still family owned and run, and to this day has maintained its reputation as possibly the world's finest couples resort.
The luxury experience starts with a spectacular helicopter transfer from the airport, providing the best possible views of the sensational scenery, before guests pass through the beautiful pillared porte-cochère, swathed in tropical greenery, into the marble-floored lobby. On arrival there are no formalities, no paperwork, no forms to fill in. Guests are simply greeted personally by the manager and offered a rum punch at the lobby bar, before being shown to their rooms.
The rooms and suites are half-hidden among the exquisite, fragrant tropical gardens, under the luxuriant palm trees from the days when the resort was a coconut plantation. The centrepiece is the giant 150-year-old Saman tree, laced with tiny lights that cast an enchanted glow after sunset, and the winding pathways lead to a lazy river pool that meanders through the grounds, creating wading pools, secret hideaways and hidden nooks and crannies. Nearby is the Spa in the Water Garden, offering pampering treatments as well as yoga and Pilates.
At the Rendezvous, dining is an essential part of the romantic experience, and the two superb restaurants are due to be joined by a third, the Malabar, in late 2015. The culinary heart of the resort is the Terrace Restaurant, by the water's edge, a showcase of international flavours and local produce, that turns at night into a magical candlelit space with the soothing sounds of the waves as a background. The elegant Trysting Place serves the finest wines and the finest French and Caribbean dishes, complemented by damask linens, crystal, fine bone china, and soothing live guitar music.
