This exotic piece of paradise, lying between an original rainforest and half a mile of dazzling crescent-shaped beach in the north-west of St Lucia, is known as the Caribbean's most glamorous resort. Sandals Regency La Toc, surrounded by 220 acres of luxuriant tropical gardens, is an estate rather than a resort, famed both for its elegant architecture and for its classic style and charm. Originally built by Cunard, the masters of luxury, in the 1960s, it is now a magnificent couples-only retreat, filled with romance, relaxation and adventure.
The aura of glamour and sophistication begins as guests approach along the mile-long avenue of stately swaying palms, and arrive in the spacious pillared lobby, with sweeping views of the sea and the grounds. The estate features the stunning Sunset Bluff, a resort within a resort, high on a cliff with spectacular views, self-contained with its own restaurant and pool. There are two other pools, including the resort's largest, with bridges and waterfalls, and the beautiful 9-hole golf course with its emerald fairways, adding to the sense of space.
There is an abundant choice of dining at the nine spectacular restaurants, including the exquisite Armando's, beside a waterfall overlooking the Sunset Bluff pool, where Italian delicacies can be enjoyed by candlelight within dusky pink walls, inset with drapery-clad French doors. Many people's favourite is Kimonos, a two-storey Japanese restaurant built right into the side of a sheer cliff, where an entertaining chef whips up sizzling Teppenyaki dishes right in front of you. But then there is also the stunning Pitons, modelled on St Lucia's renowned twin peaks, with its grand circular dining room beneath a cone-shaped wooden dome, or the open-sided Neptune's Restaurant, overlooking the beach and offering classic Mediterranean cuisine to the sound of crashing waves.
