Of all the Sandals resorts, Halcyon Beach best seems to capture the true essence of the Caribbean. The smallest, most intimate and most laid-back of the three St Lucia Sandals resorts, overlooking a serene white-sand bay, it is perfect for those seeking a more low-key and tranquil escape. Its exquisitely beautiful surroundings, its warm personalised service and its secluded ambience make it an ideal couples-only retreat, and a favourite with many regular repeat guests.
Much of the beauty comes from the 22 acres of luxuriant gardens, filled with flowering plants and birds of paradise, the low-rise French Caribbean-style buildings blending into the landscape, with none rising above the abundant canopy of palm trees. Arriving guests pass through the stone-columned porte-cochère into the airy lobby, with plush sofas and chairs in rich jewel tones, and a huge mural of brilliant Caribbean flora as a backdrop to the reception desk. Outside, stone paths wind through the gardens towards the cottage-style accommodation buildings, and the grounds are dotted with over-sized daybeds, bright green swing benches, and cushy sofas arranged round fire pits.
The resort has two pools, the main one being right beside the sea, with a swim-up bar and groups of lounge chairs encouraging social interaction, while the second pool is tucked away in a secluded garden area for those who prefer a quiet swim. Although Halcyon Beach is the quietest of the three Sandals St Lucia resorts, there is plenty of entertainment for those who desire it, including a night club, live music and shows on the main pavilion, a piano bar, and a variety of themed events including Pirates' Night and Lovers' Night. Guests are, of course, free to use the facilities at the other two Sandals resorts, under the "Stay at one, play at three" programme, if they want even more variety.
The Halcyon Beach resort takes pride in its gourmet cuisine, and this is superbly represented by the renowned Mario's Restaurant, which draws its cooking style direct from Tuscany, and provides totally authentic Italian fare in its inviting trattoria, including its signature dish, Osso Buco alla Milanese. Kelly's Dockside Restaurant, formerly known as the Pier Restaurant, offers one of the Caribbean's most impressive and romantic settings, suspended right over the sea on a 150-foot pier, and serving delectable Caribbean recipes and spectacular fresh seafood with a live piano accompaniment. At Bayside, an open-air restaurant right by the sea, you can enjoy sumptuous international fare while being serenaded by the lapping of the waves.
