Setting new standards in old-world elegance and stylish pampering, the Sandals Royal Plantation is a romantic, luxurious sanctuary which redefines indulgent island escapism. Set high on a forested coral bluff, overlooking two beautiful golden beaches, this regal retreat began life in 1957 as a magnet for the most glamorous celebrities of the time, and since coming under the Sandals umbrella still retains its stellar reputation for true Jamaican hospitality and outstanding service. Chic sophistication and exclusive privilege are the hallmarks of this exquisite property, which belongs to the élite Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, and is Sandals' only all-butler resort.
The tone of this small but perfect hotel is set on arrival at the entrance, which is built in the style of a colonial Great House of yesteryear, fronted by terraces and manicured lawns, studded with fountains and with colourful peacocks strutting around. Arriving guests are shown into the sitting room off the elegant lobby, where they are served with a mangosa - a mango and champagne drink with a slice of sugar cane - and cold towels. The style of old-time Jamaican elegance is seen throughout the property, with classical columns, shingle roofs, chequered marble floors, and reproduction antiques in dark hardwood.
Outside, the gardens tumble down to the gorgeous twin beach coves of incredibly soft sand - one for sunbathing and one for water-sports - divided by a small wooden pier and linked by a winding path. The grounds are abundant with romantic garden pathways, and nooks and crannies where you can relax in peace with a good book. At the top of the bluff there is a small but beautiful fresh-water pool, hibiscus-tiled and with two whirlpools, and beside it there is a large free-form two-tier hot tub, with a little waterfall above it. The butler service extends to the pool and the beach.
There are three exquisite gourmet restaurants here, each offering a unique ambience and an exceptional culinary experience, notably the Papillon, considered the Caribbean's finest French restaurant. Here you will find the most exotic choice of classic French meat and sea-food cuisine, prepared by award-winning chefs, amidst dazzling decor and tableware imported directly from France. The ultimate highlight here is the C Bar, the Caribbean's one and only caviar and champagne bar, serving exclusive bubbly along with the finest Russian and Iranian caviar.
