Uniquely combining exotic Caribbean charm with sophisticated European elegance, the Sandals South Coast commands a magnificent two-mile stretch of beach on the unspoilt south-western coast of Jamaica. Set within a 500-acre wilderness reserve, this spectacular resort is surrounded by lush palm groves, richly-coloured flowering vines, and stretches of white sand bordering shimmering turquoise seas, with the misty Blue Mountains forming a towering backdrop. This award-winning retreat is the only resort on this stretch of coast, guaranteeing as much space and seclusion as you could desire.
Arriving at the lavish entrance, at the end of a long driveway through gardens and palm trees, guests are welcomed at the vast reception desk in the beautiful lobby, with its vaulted ceilings, soaring marble columns, and soft sofas and chairs. At the other end of the lobby, the doors open on to the broad Venetian piazza, evocative of Old Italy, at the heart of the resort, framed by flowering gardens and studded with romantic fountains. The piazza is surrounded by the 8 restaurants, and from it, meandering pathways lead to the three architecturally distinct villages -- the Italian village is closest to the piazza and the main pool, the Dutch village in the middle, and the French village the quietest and furthest away, with both the Dutch and French villages built round their own pool.
The main pool - one of four, along with four whirlpools - is actually sensational, the largest zero-entry pool in Jamaica, with cabanas and swim-up bar, while the beach is so large that it never feels crowded, even when the resort is full. The resort's entertainment facilities include a three-storey amphitheatre, though much of the live entertainment, including fire-dancing, karaoke, and reggae and steel drum bands, takes place in the Venetian piazza. There is a phenomenal range of both land and water-based activities on offer, including kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and surfing on the water, and tennis, squash, and basketball on land, as well as a fully-equipped fitness centre, and a luxurious spa that includes a Roman meditation lanai.
There is a stunning array of gourmet restaurants, including the delightful Eleanor's, tantalising you with unique Caribbean recipes collected by the Scottish noblewoman who gave her name to the restaurant, enjoyed in surroundings that transport you back to the old plantation houses of yesteryear, including a stone fireplace and turning waterwheel. Then there is the charming Giuseppe's, where you can delight in delicious pasta creations direct from Tuscany, either indoors amidst domed windows, vaulted ceilings and a wood enclosed wine tower, or in the romantic candlelit ambience of the outdoor terrace, looking straight over the sea. Alternatively you can savour the delectable international fare served at Bayside's terrace setting overlooking the pier, with its vivid mosaics and sponge-painted walls.
